Back in April, we first
wrote
about Drive Nacho Drive,
the couple from Arizona that is traveling the world in their 1984 Volkswagen
bus. Since then, Brad and Sheena have been driving all across Southeast Asia
and are now about to embark to India. They always have some interesting stories up
on their blog and when we saw
that they had been using a Garmin nüvi to navigate through South America, we
decided to upgrade their gear and sent them a new nüvi 3597 LMTHD as well as
a fenix outdoor watch. We checked in with Brad recently to see how helpful the
Garmin fenix had been on their trip so far and he provided us some interesting insights into how he uses the watch to navigate cities with street maps.

"Sheena
and I get to wander around a lot of capitol cities, but they all seem to share
one thing in common: we never have any idea where we are,” said Brad. The
Garmin fenix comes with a base map, but in order to navigate cities, more
detailed maps can be helpful, so he decided to download street maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl. As you can
see from the picture above, downloading street maps allowed Brad to look at
maps right on his wrist. This provides a great frame of reference and
allows you, for example, to follow a breadcrumb trail back to a hotel or meeting point. It can be especially helpful when you're aborad in a foreign country and you don't speak the local language. “I downloaded street maps for all of Cambodia and Thailand,
loaded them onto the watch using the USB cord, and voila! I fired it up and
there I was, a little triangle right in the middle of Phnom Penh, Cambodia! Our
days of getting lost in cities are over."

We'll make sure to check in with Brad and Sheena again in the near future and will share some of their experiences right here on the Garmin blog.
