Garmin
Pilot
5.1 update on iOS: Check!

Just in time for the flight up to Oshkosh, Garmin Pilot has
some exciting new features available that you’ll definitely want to check out
before you takeoff!

With the latest Garmin Pilot update on iOS, terrain and
obstacle overlays are now a part of the moving map display. To access and
display obstacle or terrain, simply select the multi-layer map icon in the
lower left hand of the map, then select ‘Overlays.’ Select either ‘Obstacle’
or ‘Terrain’ to overlay either product on both digital charts or the dynamic
moving maps.

Similar to Garmin’s feature-rich avionics suite, a dedicated
terrain page allows pilots to view both obstacle and terrain in an arc or a
360-degree format. Obstacles are displayed in a standard format, allowing for
pilots to easily determine which objects are of concern. Those depicted in
yellow indicate the aircraft is within 1,000 feet of any particular obstacle
and red when it is 100 feet or less. Terrain takes it one step further and
details potential threats in a multi-level format. Terrain may be depicted as
follows:

  • Red:     <
    100 feet
  • Yellow:  < 1,000 feet
  • Green: < 2,000 feet
  • Black:    > 2,000 feet

Adding to the lineup in 5.1, Preferred Routing is available
once an active flight plan is entered into Garmin Pilot. What exactly is
Preferred Routing? Simply put, entering a departure and destination airport
pair will automatically populate routes that other pilots have recently flown
or filed. These routes are conveniently sorted by altitude, aircraft type,
date, and the most commonly filed flight plan between the two airports. To
access these preferred routes, enter a valid flight plan into Garmin Pilot and
select ‘File & Brief’ and then select ‘Routes.’

Contributing to the ease of flight planning, Garmin Pilot
5.1 also allows pilots to load the runway associated with the appropriate
Standard Instrument Departures (SID) or Standard Terminal Arrival Routes
(STAR). To access these specific runways associated within a SID/STAR, first
enter a valid flight plan. Then select the airport, similar to this example ‘KFCM’
> ‘Add Departure’ > select the appropriate departure and then the
proper runway.

There’s a lot to take care of on your checklist (pun
intended!) before you head to the annual Oshkosh airshow. Don’t forget to
update Garmin Pilot to version 5.1 on your iPad or iPhone so you can check out
and fly with the latest features!
