Tour of California: Zabriskie gets record win in time trial, teammates close behind

ToCS6_Zabriskie_Waylon_GW AToC-St6-014-5218 Team Garmin's Dave Zabriskie set a new course record today in Solvang, winning the 24 km Tour of California time trial by a decisive 14-second margin. Meanwhile, three teammates strengthened their holds on top 10 placements in the general classification. Christian Vande Velde used a Top 10 time trial finish to move into 4th place overall, and Tom Danielson (5th) and Ryder Hesjedal (8th) are right there with him in America's biggest cycling race. As has become tradition for Dave (as you can see from this 2009 photo at left), he carried his son Waylon to the stage for the podium presentation – and even let the little guy get the kisses from the lovely ladies. Minutes after the victory was official, Dave told Versus commentator Bob Roll that after today's big win, "Tomorrow's going to be very, very hard." That would be the 122 km (76 miles) day of climbing that culminates in a mountaintop finish on Mt. Baldy. How much climbing? Check out the elevation profile.

Fortunately, Garmin-Cervelo has talented climbers (including Dan Martin, who showcased his aggressive riding Thursday)…and sprinters…and time trialists, as they proved today when the argyle armada stacked four in the top 13 of the stage standings.
