Pro Tips: Preparing for Spring Turkey Season

When gearing up for turkey season, there are a few things that you shouldn’t drop the ball on.

Check your gear

  • Make sure you have batteries and updated topographic and hunt maps in your Garmin Rino or Montana handheld GPS units
  • Have you looked at your turkey calls recently? Check to see if your striker and box calls need tuned, and be sure to practice your calling.
  • If you’re hunting with a shotgun, make sure you’ve patterned it, checked your choke tubes, and are positive that your scope hasn’t been knocked since last season.
  • If you’re bowhunting this season, get out and practice months beforehand on a daily basis. Even if you’re just putting a few arrows in the target, your muscles will know it over time.

Scouting

  • This is probably the most important aspect of preparing for turkey season. Start by looking at the big picture – find a high vantage point and use your ears to find them. From there, go find the roost on foot.
  • Use Garmin HuntView maps to help plan your hunt. HuntView maps will help you find both public and private lands, while offering you routable roads and trails.
  • Use trail cameras to your advantage. Gas prices are only going to go up from here, so if you can use trail cams to minimize your trips out into the field, it will save you both time and money.
