Garmin fan Paul Combs recently came out on top at the Solo Pro Series tournament at Stockton Lake, MO with a 5 fish limit that weighed 18.22 pounds. Paul credits his Garmin electronics and mapping as playing a key part in his success. Here is his tournament story:

I found one area in practice that was holding fish and caught two keepers there in the first 30 minutes of the tournament, one being almost 4 pounds. I then filled out my limit in a couple places that you could only find using Garmin’s MaxDef maps. I found places that were fairly flat, but had some deep water cut into the banks that would not found on other maps. To the average competitor, these places looked like nothing from a distance, which I used to my advantage. I only found those key areas by studying Garmin’s maps and contours.

In practice I found a few brush piles with SideVü and went back to them the morning of the tournament and broke off a good fish. I revisited it an hour before weigh-in and upgraded by half a pound, and 15 minutes later caught a 7.60 pounder that ended up being 2nd big bass in the tournament. The key to this was Panoptix. There were about 6 or 7 brush piles in a small cluster where I caught the big fish. I stayed off them with Panoptix and would point the trolling motor at each one and cast directly to it and pick each one of them apart. Without Panoptix, I probably would not have made the right cast to that brush pile that was holding that 7.60! I felt the biggest key for me winning was my Garmin electronics and MaxDef mapping and Panoptix. Thanks Garmin!
