Pre-race
Race day 004 On Saturday, the Garmin campus was awash in pink shirts and sparkling faces as we hosted a 5k run for the local Girls on the Run council. The crowd of 550 runners included 160 Girls on the Run participants, plus their coaches, family members, running buddies and members of the community. The run was the culmination of 10 weeks of training and healthy lifestyle education for these young girls. Proud parents ran alongside their daughters or cheered them on at the finish, then watched as they received a medal from a woman who’s been a hero of running to many, Molly Barker. Molly, founder of Girls on the Run, spent a few days in Kansas City, visiting several Girls on the Run sites, meeting with volunteer coaches, being interviewed by a local news station, and then serving as our special guest at the 5k run.

Race day 008Race day 006 Race day 002  After some of us were nearly hoarse from cheering girls through the course, we gathered for some special announcements. Jake, who’d saved his voice by using a megaphone to cheer and direct runners, took the stage for some news we’ve been eager to share. He announced that Garmin has stepped up as a sponsor of SoleMates, the adult charity runner program benefitting Girls on the Run. Jake asked Molly to join him on stage, then presented her with our newest fitness watch, the Forerunner 110. Molly, who’s had a bit of Forerunner envy after a couple of her staff members became Forerunner devotees, was truly surprised and eager to try her new toy. And since Molly travels a lot attending Girls on the Run events around the country, she’ll now be able to know exactly how far and how fast she’s gone, anytime and anywhere. Jake even encouraged her to upload her activities to Garmin Connect and share them with her friends and fans so all can see where this Girl on the Run has been. We’ll be announcing further details of our sponsorship soon, so keep it tuned right here for more news.
