Oshkosh updates: SkyCatcher and G300

Osh4_1831Osh1_1835 It’s Day 2 at Airplane Mecca and we’re as busy as ever. Yesterday the booth was packed with people from the show’s opening to the close, and today seems to be shaping up the same way. This year seems to be the year for LSA’s (light sport aircraft). Several companies have announced them and many have yet to decide who their avionics supplier will be. One company that has announced and decided on the avionics is Cessna. Their new 162 SkyCatcher has a Garmin G300 cockpit. Yep, that’s right. We now have a G300 added to the lineup — not to mention a G1000, G900X and G600.

Osh3_1834Osh2_1830The G300 avionics suite is a PFD/MFD combination with a VFR GPS, COM and transponder. Cessna’s standard avionics package is to have the information presented on a single, split-screen PFD and MFD; however, you can also get an optional configuration of two dedicated PFD and MFD displays. If I was buying this sweet $109,000 airplane, I would get the two screens. After all, you can never have enough glass, right? Garmin fans will recognize a few other components in the panel, too. The COM is our SL 40 and the Mode C Transponder is our GTX 327. If you think you want a SkyCatcher you’d better get your order in soon. Cessna’s LSA’s ultimate job may be to Catch some Sky, but right now, it’s just catching lots of orders.
