Lucy Flies With Garmin Pilot 5.2!
Admission: I am a bit of a weather nut. Luckily, I get to
combine my love for aviation and passion for meteorology, together!
Thanks to the latest Garmin Pilot update that just came available yesterday on
iOS, I got to check out some of the latest features which successfully helped
me maneuver around some late summer storms!
The terrain and obstacle page can now be viewed in split
screen mode by selecting, ‘Home’
> ‘Map’ > ‘Menu’ > ‘Split Screen’ > ‘Terrain.’
Even more, pilots may now pinch/zoom on the terrain page just as they would on
the moving map page.
Another flagship feature of the latest version for iOS is
the iPhone redesign. With a new interface, Garmin Pilot is more
intuitive. Even more, users will see that the application more closely
represents what they see on the iPad version of Garmin Pilot!
The addition of extended runway centerlines is one of my
favorite features in 5.2! Why do I like this so much? It’s perfect when flying
into unfamiliar airports where the runways are in close proximity to each other. At airports like
KMLI, (Moline, Illinois) flying a simple traffic pattern can be difficult.
Displaying the extended runway centerline option ensures you line up for the
correct runway, each time!
Distance rings are a new addition to Garmin Pilot on iOS, as
well. You might be asking yourself, “What would I use those for?” Check out the
screenshot from last night when a well-defined line of thunderstorms developed West of the Kansas City metro area. By enabling the distance ring feature,
I could easily see at all times just how far these thunderstorms were from my
intended flight path.
To access either the extended runway centerline feature or
enable distance rings select, ‘Home’
> ‘Map’ > ‘Menu’ > ‘Setup Map’ > ‘Ownship/Route’
It goes without saying, the latest additions to Garmin Pilot
aid pilots tremendously as it relates to situational awareness whether you’re
flying into unfamiliar airports or avoiding weather. Check out the storm (as seen in the radar screenshot above) as we navigated around it from
7,000 ft AGL last night!
