Clipper Update: The Race to Rio

Beautiful conditions

Last week, Team Garmin and the rest of the Clipper fleet
took began the second leg of the Clipper Round the World Race.  Leg Two is a 5,000 mile
trek across the Atlantic from Brest, France to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Over the last few weeks, the fleet has experienced very
close racing and occasional high winds.  The fleets have also had to deal with extremely thick fog, as seen below.  Currently,
Team Garmin sits in 6th place and you can follow the live tracking
action here for all teams involved.  The skippers from each boat
also document their experiences, goals and statuses of the crew.  Here is the latest update from Team Garmin
skipper Damien Parnham:

Thick fogPace, positive attitude and consistent effort; this is a
motto that Team Garmin sail and live by. The team is so happy that the
hard work is starting to pay off. I am so proud that with every call to get a
sail up or down there has never been a gripe.

It’s been another good day of gains to Team Garmin. We are still working our way back into the fleet with a goal to get the best result we can. With the weather still being full of nice breezes, wind holes and squalls of over 25 knots and rain, it makes for interesting sailing and sail change practice.

We agreed that with a small team of 17, the work load would
be large when a number of evolutions would require people out of their bunks to
get it done. I am sailing with a motivated team that wants to do their best and
will work as hard as it takes to support each other.

As our thoughts turn to the homage that is paid to Neptune
as we cross the Equator, but with three of us on board that have crossed the
Equator, one of us will have to lead the team through the right of passage.

The skyline at dawn and sunset has been mind-blowing with
amazing colors with the combination of the moisture and clouds. The crew love
this part of the day and for some having a sunrise and sunset over water is a
new experience. Watching the sun set as you sail along at 9 knots sitting on
the rail is cool in its self but then when the sun sets you can turn 180
degrees and watch the full moon rise up in the sky with the final colors of
sunset in the cloud line.

Team Garmin

Keep up the good work, Team Garmin.  And safe travels to all the fleets in the race!
