In March, the SCCA named Garmin VIRB as its official camera and also announced VIRB as the presenting sponsor for two of the association’s biggest events – Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals and SCCA National Championship Runoffs.

Organized into nine divisions, 115 regions in all, spanning all 50 states, SCCA drivers will now have the ability to track valuable measurements like speed, acceleration, braking, lap time, and lap count (not to mention a host of more detailed OBD-II sensors that provide data from within an engine).

Coinciding with the VIRB sponsorship will be the creation of the Tire Rack Solo Starting line program. Bringing the classroom to the driver’s seat, students of the school will have video and GPS data captured during their tenure in the program and, upon graduation, will receive both elements from the VIRB on a removable microSD card to relive their early racing memories whenever and wherever they so choose.

For those unaware of the SCCA programs, Solo is more officially referred to as Autocross and is similar in style to a slalom ski competition. Drivers are timed one at a time on a flat course that is clearly defined by cones or permanent lines. Drivers must show superb car handling to handle the course at relatively high speeds. Solo is often the entry level to motorsport and drivers advance from regional divisions to participate at the national finals, held each of the past seven years in Lincoln, Neb. at Lincoln Airpark. The 43rd edition of the competition takes place this September and all 1,200 participants are asked to go tropical with this year’s slogan being, ‘The Return 2 Concrete Beach’.

On the contrary, Runoffs is the national championship of Club racing, where more experienced drivers who have acquired regional or national racing licenses compete with modified or “formula” sports racers on dedicated race tracks. Making VIRB’s first Runoffs National Championship even more memorable this year will be the event’s return to one of America’s most iconic locations- Daytona International Speedway. The historic landmark will undoubtedly be eager to welcome drivers for the first time since 1969.
