Five Finesse Techniques for Finicky Bass
When the bite gets undeniably tough, you don’t have much of a choice but to switch to a finesse technique. Here are some of our favorite ways to catch finicky bass.
1. Drop Shot
One of our favorite finesse techniques for finicky bass is drop shotting. You can either cast it, or opt for a little video game fishing over your trolling motor using your Garmin GPSMAP 1040xs or GPSMAP 7610xsv combo unit. Want to take fun fishing to the next level? Hook up a Panoptix forward-looking sonar transducer and you’ll be having the time of your life watching the fish eat your bait in real-time.
2. Shaky Head
Rigging a soft plastic worm or grub on a shaky head is a foolproof method for catching large numbers of fish. Stand-up shaky heads such as the Buckeye Spot Remover are designed to drag across the bottom while keeping the bait sitting vertically in the water column.
3. Ned Rig
The Ned Rig, named after Kansas angler Ned Kehde, who has been catching fish on the rig since 2006. What is the Ned Rig? It is a senko-style bait, such as the Z-Man Finesse TRD or half of a 5” ZinkerZ, affixed to a mushroom head jig weighing anywhere from 1/32-ounce to as heavy as 1/8-ounce. Its profile is absolutely irresistible to both largemouth and smallmouth bass, which is reason enough for the Ned Rig to be in every finesse angler’s arsenal.
4. Wacky Rig
The wacky rig is another fun way to catch large numbers of fish, even when the bite is tough. It has a slow, erratic fall that is that is tempting for any fastidious bass to inhale. When the bait hits the bottom, jig it up and let it fall again to charm fish into biting your bait.
5. Open Hook Tube
Open hook tubes are a great way to catch largemouth, but are especially delectable for smallmouth. You can go with a larger bodied tube such as the Snack Daddy Elite Tube, or when the bite is extra tough, you can’t go wrong with a smaller profile tube like the Strike King Bitsy Tube.
