Cannondale-Drapac Pro Cycling Weighs in on the Index Smart Scale

During the Tour, it’s pivotal that riders maintain their weight as well as monitor their overall health and nutrition.  With the help from Garmin’s Index Smart Scale, Cannondale-Drapac Pro Cycling can measure weight (lbs, kg, st), body mass index (BMI), body fat/water percentage, bone mass and skeletal muscle mass. We spoke with the team’s head of nutrition, Nigel Mitchell, on how the team uses the Index Smart Scale data to train and compete.

“We use Garmin Index Smart Scale to provide reliable data of the riders’ overall nutritional status. Weight is something that’s very important in bike racing, but not just for the reasons most people imagine,” said Mitchell. “So it’s really important to understand how much weight a guy loses during a stage. We need to replace that, so it’s imperative to have a clear handle on it.”

Cannondale-Drapac uses a number of metrics including the data from the scale to better understand and support the riders. “Fluctuations in weight are normal, but we don’t want to see anything extreme. And if we’re seeing that, then we may need to re-work the diets of the racers or add more fluids, especially after a hot stage,” said Mitchell.

“It’s incredible helpful to have a reliable scale,” said Mitchell. “The smart scale is used on a daily basis at the Tour de France. Actually, we use them several times a day — morning, right after the stage, and then just before bed. So it’s incredibly helpful to have a reliable scale.”
