Adventure Tour: Kansas

At the Garmin headquarters, we’re lucky enough to call the sunflower state home. We’re located on the outskirts of Kansas City in Olathe (Oh-LAY-the), and have access to one of the greatest states in all the land. And even though most people may consider us just a flyover state – with our pancake-flat terrain and endless span of crops – we have quite a few gems worth an aviation adventure.

Flint Hills

Maybe the most beautiful expanse of land throughout the entire region, the Flint Hills are a rolling tallgrass prairie with cattle ranches in the central part of the state. In spring and early summer, the luscious green landscape provides the perfect setting for a beautiful sunset from the sky.

We B Smokin’ (K81)

Miami County Airport in Paola, just south of Kansas City, is home to We B Smokin, one of the best BBQ joints in the Kansas City area. A frequent $100 hamburger or breakfast flight for local pilots, you’ll find mouth-watering sweet smoked meats as well as pancakes big enough to satisfy the biggest appetites around.

Beaumont Hotel (07S)

In the sleepy former railroad town of Beaumont, located at the southeast corner of the Flint Hills, and about 40 miles east of Wichita, you’ll find a unique aviation experience. The town not only houses the last known Frisco built wooden water of its kind in existence, it also boasts a quant bed and breakfast that caters to pilots. A grass runway is carved into a field just east of town, and the main street is a taxiway to the hotel. Stop in for a bite to eat in the café, or stay for a few nights.

Mid-America Air Museum (LBL)

If you’re into old airplanes and aviation artifacts, Liberal may be the spot for you. This city at the southwest corner of the state, near both the Colorado and Oklahoma border, boasts one of the largest air museums in the country, housing more than 100 aircrafts. With relics ranging from the early days of flight, through the jet age and even NASA, it’s sure to please everyone’s aviation palate.

Stearman Field Bar & Grill (1K1)

About 10 miles northeast of Wichita, you can find one of the most unique airports around. Named for the famous Wichita aircraft designer, Stearman Field has an eclectic mix of vintage airplanes, warbirds and modern jets. Add to that a great aviation themed restaurant next to the ramp and it’s any pilots ideal spot. Stearman Field hosts an annual fly-in each June with live music, as well as a pumpkin drop competition each fall.
