As a kid you may remember the joy of taking part in treasure hunts outside with your friends.  Well with the summer months ahead, it’s the perfect time to replenish those wonderful childhood memories with geocaching. What is geocaching? Geocaching is a real-life outdoor treasure hunt that utilizes GPS technologies to discover different treasures all around us. With over 4 million geocaches throughout the world, it’s easy to find a cache close to you. You and your friends can navigate to a particular GPS position and then try to uncover the geocache treasure secretly hidden near that location.

To get started you’ll first need a membership with geocaching.com and a GPS device to help you navigate. A geocache always holds a logbook for you to record your find, but bigger caches may include a logbook and some random objects that can really transform the journey into a genuine treasure hunt. When you find a cache, sign the logbook and place it back in its unique hiding spot. The only real rule in geocaching is that if you take something from the cache container, it’s usually appropriate to leave something of equal or greater value in its place.

Garmin has a wide variety of handhelds and GPS devices that are perfect for geocaching. Take a look at the Garmin Oregon 650T, a handheld GPS unit where you can hold all 4 million caches, read full descriptions and hints, filter caches by size, terrain, difficulty and type, and record your logs in the field. You can even take pictures to capture your discovery.
