Why I Run: With a Stroller

Running with a Stroller

We hope you enjoy this guest blog from Katie McFarland of Mom’s Little Running Buddy discussing how and why she runs with her kids in a stroller.

Let’s start way back in the 1990’s. I was a volleyball player and the only reason we ran was to condition. I played in college and it was my passion. When college ended, I found myself with a lot of pent up energy and nowhere to put it. One summer day, I laced up my shoes and went outside. I told myself I would just run 5 minutes and then start to walk. That run was humbling and rewarding all at the same time. I had no idea how far I went or what my pace was. At the time, I wasn’t sure I was going to do it again. Two days later, I got the itch to try it again and this run was longer and a little less humbling. It was this cycle that has led me to where I am today. I guess you never lose that desire to see how far you can go.

I’ve officially been running for almost 11 years now and I can’t imagine life without running or Garmin.  Now as a wife, mom of two young kids, a corporate executive, and a blogger, finding time to run can be challenging. It’s the culmination of all of these challenges that the idea of National Stroller Running Day was born. I travel about 50% of the time so when I am home, my first priority is to spend time with my family. That’s where my stroller comes in handy. Much of my running time at home is spent with my tots in tow. I set my goals, program my Forerunner 620 and take off. The Forerunner 620 and the stroller have both improved my running in ways that I couldn’t have imagined. I’m not only stronger, but I’m a more educated runner now which has been rewarding.

If you’ve ever run with a stroller and two toddlers, you know there’s nothing easy about it, but it’s fun and a necessity. National Stroller Running Day is about celebrating all those stroller runners who have the same mindset. It’s about going the extra mile to run and staying fit and we will be celebrating that on May 31, 2015. There are many ways you can get involved. You can organize a local meetup for your favorite stroller runners, you can find a local stroller-friendly race, you can join me in Los Angeles for Club MomMe’s StrollnRun or you can head out on your own.

Be sure to snap a picture of your adventures and post it on social media using the #StrollerRun15 hashtag this weekend!
