Tour of Missouri Time Trial: Christian conjures Midwest magic

Yellow_jerseySep052008_0413Today’s Tour of Missouri Time Trial was a mixed bag for Team Garmin. We’ll get the bad news out of the way. Blake Caldwell, one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, took a pretty bad spill and had to receive medical attention. There’s no immediate word on his condition, but we’ll keep you posted as we hear anything. Blake’s been down and bounced back up before, and we’re all hoping he’s back on his feet – and his bike – in no time.

Now for the great news. Four-time U.S. National Time Trial champion David Zabriskie set the tone early by establishing the time to beat. And even though the GC contenders were able to target DZ’s specific time, only four were able to top it. And at the top of the list is a man from the Midwest, Team Garmin’s Christian Vande Velde. Christian conquered the course in 39 minutes, 52 seconds, and took the overall lead in the Tour of Missouri. And two Garmin teammates joined Christian and David in the Top 10 (actually, it was 4 in the top 9). Tom Danielson was the eighth fastest on the day, and Danny Pate was close behind in ninth place. This puts Team Garmin exactly where they want to be heading into the second half of the Tour of Missouri. We’ll have all of your updates – from Jake’s Twitter Feed to Garmin’s Flickr Page to the Team Garmin site – and we’ll be wishing Blake a speedy recovery.
