Tour of Missouri: A full day is just the beginning
Monday’s hectic day of racing took Team Garmin, 14 other elite teams (120 cyclists overall) and the dynamic duo of Jake and Peg from historic St. Joseph through northwest Missouri to the bustling Plaza of Kansas City. Ninety miles later, the soggy saga came down to a sprint. And just as he did four times in France, Mark Cavendish proved to be the fastest of the field. But not by much. Team Garmin’s Tyler Farrar was in the British speedster’s shadow, finishing second and earning a place on the podium. And Tyler wasn’t the only Team Garmin connection in the spotlight. Team director Chann McRae’s wife, Jen, was among the best of the best in the women’s race and basked in the applause when she hoisted her bouquet on stage.
Kansas City’s cycling enthusiasts came out in droves, cheering the riders along Ward Parkway, around Meyer Circle and past the stunning architecture of the Plaza. And Jake and Peg buzzed into town just in time to see their fellow bloggers at the finish line. Tomorrow they pass the proverbial baton (and the rental car) so that everyone else can share in the fun. But you can bet they’ll be glued to their inboxes and updates so that you’ll be in on the action.
