Tour de France: Another amazing day for Team Garmin

Stage2 JV podium Stage2 Thor yellow Fireworks were flying this morning in France as Team Garmin and the rest of the professional peloton neared the finish line. Other squads had organized their leadout trains for their sprinters, but Garmin’s bright blue helmets – and the brilliant yellow jersey of Thor Hushovd – swarmed near the front to put American Tyler Farrar in perfect position. And in the final half-kilometer, the plan played out with precision. Thor, not only the current overall race leader but also the reigning world champion, supported Tyler by leading him into the final hundred meters, where longtime leadout specialist Julian Dean took over as the crucial escort. And with opponents storming up each side of him, Tyler captured his first stage victory at the Tour de France – adding to an already impressive resume of other major wins – and he flashed a W to the sky in honor of his fallen best friend Wouter Weylandt, who died during the Giro d’Italia. With a victory in the team time trial (pictured here) and its first individual stage win at the Tour, Garmin has now won two of the first three stages while keeping Thor in the overall leader’s jersey for another day. For this American powerhouse of a team – and America’s top sprinter – it was quite the holiday celebration.
