Team Garmin: Historic day at TdF Team Time Trial

TTT The 2011 Tour de France team time trial proved historic for Team Garmin-Cervelo and management company Slipstream Sports. Garmin emerged victorious with its first stage win in the Tour de France – a fitting reward for a true team effort – and world champion Thor Hushovd captured the first yellow leader’s jersey emblazened with a Garmin logo. After a chaotic finish to Saturday’s opening stage, ample opportunities awaited the Argyle Armada, but rivals were motivated to capitalize as well. With Thor in third place of the overall standings, just 6 seconds behind the race leader, Garmin started the day with the yellow jersey within reach. But with the world’s best squads and time trialists lining up later in the day, Garmin was truly racing against the clock with hopes of establishing an unbeatable benchmark.

Garmin TdF Podium Thor lined up in the polka dots jersey of the King of the Mountains (passed down from Phillipe Gilbert who held the lead in overall, sprint points and climbing but can only wear one jersey), Dave Zabriskie was in his national champion stars and stripes, and the American powerhouse team was rounded out by its GC hopefuls, climbers and sprinters. 24 minutes and 48 seconds later, after speeding along at more than 55 km/hr, they had established a new time to beat – and the tension shifted from racing to waiting and watching. Stellar teams lined up, hit the streets and fell just short of topping Garmin’s time. And when the final two teams failed to better that benchmark, the victory was officially in the hands of Garmin-Cervelo (by a 4-second margin) with the yellow jersey on Thor’s chest. Thor and teammate David Millar are now in 1st and 2nd with just a 1-second margin over third-place Cadel Evans. We’ll share more details and photos as race reports roll in. Tomorrow’s stage is one for the sprinters, and Team Garmin’s selflessness is already on display as Thor has made it clear that he’ll be working for teammate Tyler Farrar to get a stage win. It’s been an amazing start to what will be a riveting Tour, and we can’t wait to share the stories throughout the next month!
