The Canondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team is fresh off the Tour de France. Last week the team shifted it’s focus to the Tour of Utah, with a different group of riders. The race started on August 3rd and riders crossed the finish line on August 9th and received many notable finishes.

Despite the cold and wet conditions on the first day, rider Alex Howes was able to sprint to a second place finish. Pulling away from the peloton and crossing the finish line just thirty seconds before them. Not only did Howes earn second place, but the team also earned the best overall team award for the first stage. It was a solid start for the team and provided some momentum heading into the rest of the race.

Stage four supplied some more excitement for the team as Ben King and Ted King made headlines. Just a day after Ben King had fallen in an ugly crash, he volunteered himself to make a break, in hopes of winning the stage. Although the peloton eventually caught up to him, it proved that the team was not done yet. Also, Ted King was up for the best domestique rider of the stage and won the American Credit Union Fan Favorite jersey, thanks to popular vote.

Dombrowski

Building off of the energy supplied by the previous stage, the team went on to assert their dominance in stage six. The big story of the day was Joe Dombrowski, the 24 year-old won his first professional race and had a tremendous ride. This leg of the race provided some challenging climbs and Dombrowski was able to pull away from the pack, with help from some key teammates, and outlast the other riders. This ride delivered Dombrowski a stage win, the yellow jersey and a 50-second advantage heading into the final stage. Ben King also earned the award for the most aggressive rider.

Just a day after winning his first professional race, Joe Dombrowski went on to protect his lead and ultimately win the 2015 Tour of Utah. He continued to ride the climbs and stick with the leaders who were breaking away from the peloton. Dombrowski rode conservatively though and didn’t push it too hard. Finishing in ninth place was enough to protect his overall lead and claim the yellow jersey again.

Not only was this a substantial win for the Canondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team, but it was also a huge accomplishment for Joe Dombrowski. He is about to have his Grand Tour debut and is listed to start the Vuelta a España at the end of August.
