The Necessary Foods for Active Athletes

How balanced is your diet? Do you feel like you are getting the energy you need from food?

For Barb Hamilton, a nutritionist at KC Whole Nutrition, it’s all about finding the correct foods to consume.

“The best foods that you can choose to eat are healthy whole foods (real foods),” she explains. “Avoid foods with additives and preservatives and any ingredient that you don't recognize or can't find on your pantry shelf as a staple.”

So following Barb’s advice, here are some of our favorite healthy foods to eat when preparing for any activity.

Mixed nuts

Mixed Nuts

Of all the nuts, almonds remain one of the best sources of energy out there. It’s a great source of protein to satisfy your hunger, and also has a healthy dose of Vitamin E that benefits your skin and eyes. They are easy on the go as well. When packing up for a trail run pop a few in your mouth and save the rest for later.

Bananas

Bananas

Bananas are one of the best pre-race foods for runners. They are packed with quick energy through carbohydrates. Bananas are also high in potassium, which has been shown to reduce the potential for cramping.

Salmon

Having salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Those fats boost heart health and improve your blood vessels and nervous system functionality. Studies have also shown that salmon helps maintain insulin levels, can assist in preventing vision problems, and may reduce the risk of colon, prostate, and kidney cancers.

Cherries

Cherries

This fruit also provides many benefits to you including a high concentration of antioxidants. Among other things, antioxidants may reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and immunodeficiencies.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of the best sources of carbohydrates out there. Make sure to choose the whole grain version too — it gives you a great source of fiber and stores energy for later in your workout.
