On Saturday over a hundred Citations, King Airs and Hawkers filled the skies with more than 700 athletes and coaches for the Citation Special Olympics Airlift.  The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, which is taking place this week in Trenton, New Jersey, will host over 3,500 athletes from around the country in 16 different sports. The Special Olympics Games feature Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as athletic and educational programs for participants and their families. Screen Shot 2014-06-16 at 1.54.21 PM

As part of the Citation Special Olympics Airlift, owners donate their aircraft, crews and fuel expenses in an effort to transport Special Olympics athletes and coaches to the 2014 USA Games. The aviation community’s commitment to the event was evident Saturday as it was estimated a Citation business jet was taking off or landing every two minutes for 10 hours. This weekend, hundreds of aircraft arrived at Mercer County Airport (KTTN) in Trenton, marking this as the largest fleet of business aircraft arriving at any given airport in the country on Saturday.

Together with over 80 other companies, Garmin is a proud participant of the Citation Special Olympics Airlift this year. This past Saturday, along with two other participating companies, we had the opportunity to fly a total of 13 VIP athletes and four coaches from Wichita, KS to Trenton, NJ. On Saturday, July 21st our Citation will make another trip to Trenton to pick up the same athletes we flew last weekend and fly them back home to Kansas. As the Airlift slogan appropriately states, “Everybody needs a lift every now and then” and we are honored to give these very special athletes a “lift” to compete in the 2014 Games.

Good luck to all of the 2014 Special Olympics athletes and coaches this week!
