Team Garmin: Ride the Rockies 2007
But this week is all about riding. This year’s RTR covers 422 miles in seven days – just over 60 miles per day. After meeting up with old friends from Team DFL and Team Bar2Bar for a little liquid carbo loading, we got up early Sunday for the official start of RTR. It was the toughest first day in my short three-year history on the ride – 99 miles and nearly 5,000 feet of elevation gain.
Sunday’s ride started with a nice climb up Swan Mtn from Frisco to Dillon following by 45 miles of mostly downhill riding through beautiful countryside. But then it turned ugly. As we started the climb up Rabbit Ears Pass — from about 7,500 ft elev to over 9,500 the temperature climbed and the wind started gusting. What would have been a tough climb under ideal conditions became a slow, painful, hot and windy century ride in the Rockies. There were a number of SAG wagon casualties but all four Team Garmin members (me, David, Kris and Patty) went the distance.
Today’s ride (Monday) is a short (44 miles), relatively flat recovery ride from Steamboat Springs to Craig, CO. It will be a welcome change respite from today. I’m just praying for no headwind!
After depending on my nuvi 360 to get me around the country for the past several weeks I decided to bring it along on Ride the Rockies. While every ounce on the bike counts, I figure the nuvi is worth it. In fact, nuvi led me straight to the Moose Jaw Bar in Frisco tonight – location of the Team Bar2Bar kickoff – and I’ll be depending on it to get me around each town hosting an overnight during the ride. I’m quickly learning that Garmin is everywhere — during my recent business trip to Chicago, even my cabbie had one!
And, of course, I’ll be relying on my Edge 305 to record my speed, distance, elevation gain, average heart rate, calories burned, and even the grade of the hill I’m climbing at any given time. Stay tuned for more tales from the ride. Team Garmin will check in whenever we have the time, energy and internet access needed to post!
Ride on!
