It’s not every day you get to go stride-for-stride with two of the biggest names in distance running. Add in perfect Chicago weather and the picturesque scenery of Lakeshore Drive, and you have a day designed for  pounding the pavement.

The group that gathered at Garmin’s flagship store on Michigan Ave. for Saturday’s Running Club enjoyed a special treat during and after its weekly fun run. Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer of Runner’s World, and Carey Pinkowski, Executive Race Director of the Chicago Marathon, joined us for five miles (or four, or six, as people played it by ear) and then shared their insight on endurance training.

From the Badwater 146 (its 146 miles go from the lowest point in the Western hemisphere to the highest point in the contiguous 48 states) to burro racing (tethered to animals that take you for a 5K sprint – in a 10K race), Bart had us laughing and learning and longing for his stamina.

When Bart passed the proverbial baton to his longtime friend, Carey gave us an insider’s perspective on building one of the world’s best-known marathons. He even gave us a sneak preview of some of the biggest names coming to Chicago for this year’s race, but it was for our ears only at this point.

Then, they stuck around and gave away free entries to the Distance Classic and the grand prize – a Garmin Forerunner 305, which we were all familiar with after taking several out for a spin earlier that day. All in all, the day was a success, and Bart, Carey and marathon General Manager Mike Nishi answered every question that our runners could throw at them.

If you missed it, make sure you show up to the Garmin store (663 N. Michigan Ave.) every Saturday for Running Club. We hope to see you there!
