Running Couple Celebrates One Year Anniversary After Meeting in Chicago Store
When Kimberly Berkowski walked into the Garmin Store in Chicago last July, she never thought she would walk out with more than a watch. An avid runner looking for the latest and greatest, Kimberly was greeted by one of the store’s top sales associates, Elliot Cohen.
A couple minutes later, a fellow runner named Jason Wiedenhoeft joined their conversation. As Elliot reviewed the products, it became clear he was the third wheel. Taking a hint, Elliot backed away, leaving Jason and Kimberly to each other.
“I think Elliot was a little confused and perhaps bothered that he couldn’t finish his product overview,” Kimberly said. “But Jason and I just had a connection right off the bat.”
Turns out Jason and Kimberly lived just five blocks from one another and shared a passion for running. Their first date was a running date and yes, they both wore their Garmin watches. At the time, they both had Forerunner 610s. Since then Kimberly purchased a 920XT and Jason uses a fēnix 3. They are both training for the Chicago Triathlon next month, which will be Kimberly’s first triathlon and their first race as a couple.
Just last week, Kimberly contacted the store to order Jason’s one-year anniversary gift: a cadence sensor and bike mount for his fēnix 3. Upon hearing the story, the Garmin Chicago team knew they had to do something special.
On the night of their anniversary, July 6, Kimberly suggested to Jason they visit the store. The team was ready with a few surprises for their special day. Thinking the visit was just to reminisce, Jason was especially excited to receive his gift from Kimberly.
“Garmin really does help you find your way!” Jason joked, adding in. “If you ever want to host a Garmin singles mixer, we are here to help you!”
They were both sad to miss Elliot, who was off that day, but vowed to return and see him again. “We love our Garmins and will be customers of your store for life!” Kimberly exclaimed.
