Roger’s Runway: WAAS Hardware Changes

RogersrunwayLast week I discussed some of the pre-upgraded WAAS items that you should cover with your dealer, like is your airplane on the approved model list.   This week I am covering some of the major hardware changes that may be needed.  First and the most obvious would be the antenna.  If you are upgrading the GNS430/530 then you were using a non-WAAS antenna.  A new antenna is included with the upgrade and the avionic shop can get that switched out.  The next two items may or may not need to be done because it will depend on the previous installation and the type of airplane you fly.  One potential change is the coax cable going between the antenna and the WAAS unit will need to be at least an RG 400/142 coax cable.  For the WAAS STC the FAA required a specific Field of View (FOV) and depending on the airplane that you are flying an annunciator control unit may need to be installed.  There are several approved control units that are part of the equipment list and this will help ease the installation process.  Remember the best thing to do is talk to the Garmin dealer so the two of you can work out a game plan for the WAAS upgrade
