Prop & Spinner: Using OBS on the GNS430/530 for runway extensions

Prop & Spinner Prop and I were flying the other evening to Willow Springs, Missouri (1H5).The airport in Willow (Prop pronounces it Willer) is about 3,500 ft long. It’s hard to see in the daylight and about impossible at night. It doesn’t have any approaches or even an FBO.

We were coming in VFR using our GARMIN GNS430 when ole’ Prop asked, “How are we ever gonna line up with the runway when you can’t even see the airport?” That is a very good question and I had a simple answer for him, “OBS.” Prop asked, “What kind of BS?” I said, “OBS.”

The GNS430 and GNS530 have a button labeled OBS (Omnibearing Selector). When you are navigating to a waypoint, it gives you the ability to select a radial from it. For example, if a controller has you hold West on the 270 degree radial from HUW VOR. First, you would make sure you are navigating to HUW. Then, when you arrive at HUW press OBS and dial in a 90 deg TO on your HSI or VOR indicator. The GNS430 and GNS530 map will actually show you the bearing to the station drawn in magenta. The radial FROM the station will be in white. Your indicator is tied to the GPS, so you will do your holds just like you do using the VOR. The difference is you can now see yourself on the map with the inbound course drawn in.

Now that we have the ability to draw radials and bearings from waypoints, we can do the same for the airport. Since we are landing on runway 17, press OBS and dial the HSI or VOR indicator to 170 degrees (the runway number). This will make an extended line to the airport on the inbound runway heading. This works great for lining up with runways at night or on hazy days.
