Pro triathlete Ben Collins tames the trails with Forerunner 210

That said, when the weather in Colorado hit the upper 50s for a week, I was quick to grab my cyclocross bike and hit the trails. And when I was given a treadmill-specific workout on a day with a high of 65, I didn’t ask permission before modifying the workout into a trail run. All the indoor training makes me appreciate being outside, and I’m certainly not wasting those workouts on boring street runs or spin-around-the-neighborhood bike rides. No, when Colorado’s bipolar weather shows me mercy, it doesn’t matter what workout is on my plan because there’s nothing that will stop me from enjoying some fresh air and a bit of an adventure.

On one of these occasions I was able to coordinate with fellow resident athletes Kevin Collington, Nick Vandam, and Jillian Peterson for a trail run in a park near campus. I had never been there, so Nick acted as our guide, but failed to warn us that he didn’t plan to follow any trails. I felt like a mountain lion scrambling up and down cliffs and over rock faces before we stumbled upon a marked trail and replaced our guide with a more sensible athlete. We ran for about an hour, getting lost several times, and I’m pretty sure that it was pure luck that got us back to our car. It was an adventure, and definitely more fun than a treadmill workout. Plus, my new Garmin Forerunner 210 caught every step, turn, stop and climb, so I can map it out on Garmin Connect.
