Peg’s Posts: See a Team Garmin-Sharp Pro be a Hero

It’s not often you see a pro cyclist pulling double duty as sag support on a ride, but it happened near Garmin headquarters recently, and we’re able to share it…all because another rider had his bike equipped with a VIRB action camera. And thanks to video overlay capability of VIRB showing speed and other data, you’ll see that this pro didn’t seem to be burdened by his extra load.

The hero of our VIRB video here is none other than Ben King, who paid a visit to Garmin headquarters along with other members of Team Garmin-Sharp following their performance at the US Pro Challenge. After sharing tales from their 2014 tours, the team took part in a community ride-out to benefit the local Bike MS event and National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Now in its sixth year, corresponding with our sponsorship of the team, this ride attracts hundreds of Garmin cyclists and community supporters, eager for a chance to “roll with the pros.”

Sam, a seasoned cyclist and Garmin engineer, had the misfortune of blowing a tire about a mile from the finish. Here’s his tire tale:

The 100 degree temperatures made the thought of fixing my tire unbearable, and I found a tree that would provide a little shade. I started to repair the tire with the help of a couple of riders that stuck around to help. I realized that the tire bead that holds the tire to the rim was broken and knew that the tire was not fixable. I put my bike on my shoulder and started waking the last mile back to Garmin. Just then, Ben King rode up after turning around and said he would carry the bike in and send a car back to pick me up. I was a little nervous about letting him carry my bike while he rode his bike, but he assured me that it would be ok. It was interesting seeing Ben King ride off down the road with my bike on his shoulder. As I walked back to Garmin on the hottest day of the year, I got many heckles and looks from the remaining riders finishing up their ride.
