Peg’s Posts: Following Garmin team at Hood to Coast relay

Team photo 2 Mt Hood Best of luck to the 15,000 runners taking part in the “mother of all relays,” the grand 200-mile Hood to Coast relay adventure. A dozen Garmin associates, including 10 from our Salem office plus two from Garmin headquarters, started their trek down the mountain about 1 hour ago. Each person will run three separate legs for a total of 36 relay legs, all of different lengths, terrain and difficulty ratings. In 2008, Jake and I were on the team and I can honestly say it was the most memorable, fun and whacky event I’ve encountered. Mind you, most of that whackiness comes from the lack of sleep, hygiene and proper nutrition that entails when you ride and run through the day and night with a van full of equally deprived coworkers.

GTU 10 location 2 I spy 002-sm While I had some pangs of “wish I were there-itis” as our Garmin team neared their start time, I also felt like I was right there with the team. Kurt and Craig sent me photos and a quick update and I was able to see the team’s exact location thanks to their GTU 10 and the Garmin Tracker app. The GTU 10 GPS locator will be the official “baton” of our Garmin Forerunner team and each runner will carry it throughout his or her relay legs. Then folks at home (with access privileges shared by the runners) can log in and follow along. Here I am, in my Hood to Coast gear from 2008, tracking the team’s location on their journey up the mountain. In addition to having the GTU 10 locator so others can track them, all of the Garmin teammates will be armed with their own Forerunner devices so we can relive their run later in Garmin Connect. Good luck Garmin Forerunners. I will be watching and cheering from work and home!

For a sneak peak at the final leg of the race, here’s my Garmin Connect data from 2008. Wading into the chilly Pacific ocean was the ideal cooldown for some road-weary legs!
