Peg’s Posts: Disney Marathon post-race rundown

Suffice it to say I hurt in places and to degrees I did not think possible. Apparently, my body produced so much lactic acid in a roughly 4-hour effort that it not only resides in my quads, calves and abs, but also in my back, neck and shoulders. At least I wasn’t the only one hobbling around a Disney park yesterday. After enjoying our first attraction at Epcot, I took a little longer than normal to climb out of the ride car and a guy behind me observed “you run the marathon too?” Had a few more similar encounters throughout the day and I probably wasn’t the only one stopping every few hours to rub Biofreeze on aching calves. After about 9 hours of walking on pavement and cobblestones, I wasn’t sure which was more taxing—running the marathon or seeing the sights the next day. If there’d been a fire or another cause for a mass exit at the parks, I would’ve just burned. Moving fast for any reason wasn’t a possibility.

Thanks again to all who posted comments and predictions for my finish time. Your words of encouragement went a long way toward getting me through the miles. Best of luck to those who are training for their first or next marathon. Good luck to Heather, another mom of three who wrote in to say she’s training for her first marathon this fall. Heather got a Forerunner 405 for Christmas and is already head over heels in love with it. I’m confident Forerunner will be your best training partner yet. Training for a marathon is a huge commitment, but even the busiest of people can make it happen. And, trust me that you can have fun along the way … and after you cross the finish line.
