Raft_trip Jump My week in Winter Park, Colorado — the so-called mountain biking capital of the U.S. — is winding down. I came in search of R&R&R (rest, relaxation, recreation) and family time, and we’ve experienced all that and more. One of our first pursuits was a raft trip on the Colorado River. This was a guided trip, and a pretty tame one, since half our raft crew were junior paddlers. We took along the rugged GPSMAP 60CS to record our data. We stopped at a rock cliff overhang to let some brave paddlers jump into the chilly river. I passed on that adventure, preferring to take pics and video instead.

Kids_biking_3 Tagalong

Biking and hiking trails abound in this small ski town. The nearby Fraser River Trail was a favorite for a quick run or a walk or bike ride with the kids. We rented bikes a couple of days, including a “tagalong” that let the youngest cyclist keep up with the pack. For every excursion, Forerunner was with us, recording our distance and pace and, if needed, directions back to our start point.

Alpine_slideAnother highlight for everyone in the group was taking in the activities at the Winter Park Resort. Take the chairlift halfway up the mountain and zoom down Colorado’s longest alpine slide. Now that was fun. Or take another lift higher up for hiking or downhill biking.

Mountain_bikers_1A couple of guys in our group got a taste of true mountain biking on our last full day. They skipped the chairlift up the mountain, choosing to plow up on their own power instead. Quite a feat for a couple of flatlanders. They rode hard for a few hours in the morning, and then after recharging back at our cabin, they hit it again in the afternoon. They took along the eTrex Vista C and Forerunner to record their data. Watch for more details of their ride in a future post, including a link to their data in MotionBased.

Caching_2Cache_1 Caching

While the guys were tearing up and down the mountain, I took the younger ones out geocaching with the help of the 60CS. We ended up finding 4 caches, including two micros. If you’ve not tried this form of high-tech treasure hunting, it’s a ton of fun, especially for young cachers. Find out more here.

Don’t forget to submit your own vacation stories and photos for a chance to win a nuvi 200! Garmin’s Big Summer Adventure contest is coming to a close.
