Oshkosh Day 2: Garmin Pilot app gets more features, more affordable
With temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees, it was certainly a hot one yesterday here at Oshkosh. But that didn't seem to stop anyone. The Garmin booth was packed and it was great to see so many new and familiar faces.
There was a lot of interest yesterday in the Garmin Pilot app for iOS and Android. Just in time for the first day of AirVenture, Garmin announced new features and a limited-time lower price for the app. Not only is the app more feature-rich than ever before, but for a limited-time, the app is more affordable than ever before with a summer flying season special price of $49.99 for an annual subscription.
So what's new with the app? Now both app platforms can support Garmin's new GDL 39 portable ADS-B receiver. When paired with a GDL 39, Garmin Pilot can display subscription-free weather and ADS-B datalink traffic information for even greater situational awareness in flight. The GDL 39 streams this information to the mobile device via built-in Bluetooth connection, so the set-up is simple and seamless.
iPad users now also have the benefit of split-screen functionality. As pilots, we all know the transition from the enroute to approach phase is one of the most critical phases of flight. Split-screen mode allows iPad users to view the moving-map display and approach chart on the same page! Subscribers can customize their iPad to display their Active NavLog, Charts, Weather Widgets, the Garmin patented panel page, or SafeTaxi directly underneath the moving map. But wait it gets better: the option to view split screen mode is available in portrait and landscape mode.
Are the app developers mind-readers, you ask? Well, let’s not get carried away, but they are certainly listening to your suggestions! The Android app also now offers a number of new capabilities including the ability to graphically edit flight plans on the moving map page and support for the Baron MobileLink for XM weather reception.
All of these updates will provide Garmin Pilot customers with a much more user-friendly experience, making it easier for you to load and view approach plates, weather, and other navigation-specific data so you can be on your way to your destination. Download the free trial before your next flight and tell us what you think!
