NBC Sports on Approach S1: “Pretty wicked gadget” is simple, unobtrusive and accurate

ApproachS1 With snow on the ground at Garmin HQ, we were glad that someone got to squeeze in a round of golf this weekend. Especially when that someone was Ryan Ballengee from NBC Sports, and he had an Approach S1 on his wrist. He shares his thoughts at NBC Sports' ProGolfTalk, and here are some highlights as he gives the Approach S1 the stamp of approval:

The concept is simple: turn on the device, let it acquire the GPS satellites like any other unit and then it will take a guess at the course on which you are. Tell it OK, then you’re off and running. There’s no syncing needed for the thousands of courses that come pre-loaded onto the device. (Isn’t flash memory incredible?)

Fresh out of the box, I was ready to go on the first tee with yardages to the front, middle and back of the green. Just in case, I played with a friend who has a laserfinder, and we double checked the accuracy on multiple occasions. It was as precise as it gets for a GPS unit. The product also does a number of the small things golfers like – measure distances, tell you how far you’ve walked (or driven in the cart) and tell you the par on each hole.

If you’re looking for something simple, unobtrusive and accurate, the S1 will do the job. It is a little pricey for some, perhaps, at a suggested retail price of $250, but it is a pretty wicked gadget for a golfer and it requires very little collateral to get it ready in the morning – just a wrist and a plug.
