Lucy’s Logbook: Tips for connecting the GDL 39 to your device

696Since the G3X and aera 79X each have two serial ports, it is rather simple to interface these units to both a GDL 39 and external serial device. Connecting the GPSMAP 695/696 only has one serial port, but I have good news for our 696 customers: the GDL 39 has two serial ports. The first port is used to disseminate traffic and weather to the connected device. Once connected to the 696, the second serial port function on the GDL 39 can be configured to pass on serial data through the GDL 39 NMEA output mode. Ultimately, you can retain the ability to pair their 696 with an external NMEA-receiving device via the GDL 39. Future plans for a secondary serial port are currently in the works.

For those of you who made it to AirVenture this year and had a chance to stop by the Garmin booth or stop in for a quick seminar, we hope everyone gained a better understanding of not only our products but ADS-B as a whole.  We hope that incorporating the GDL 39 into your aircraft is an affordable and convenient way to receive subscription-free weather and traffic.
