If you use dogs to hunt, you’re either wrapping up your training season, or you’re just getting started. Whether you use your dogs to hunt upland birds, mountain lions, bears, coons, waterfowl, or whatever it may be, the training never stops. As temperatures begin to rise, the concern for your dogs’ health and well-being should begin to increase as well.  Keeping your dogs cool and comfortable isn’t just a good idea; it can be a matter of life or death. So make sure you keep your dogs hydrated, train near water whenever possible, and give them frequent breaks.

Today, there’s something more you can do to keep an eye on your pups’ well-being.  The Garmin tempe is an inexpensive way to monitor the ambient temperature in your dogs’ crates, kennels, and trailers.  Just pair it to your Astro 320Alpha 100, fēnix 3, or other compatible Garmin device, and you’ll instantly know how hot (or cold) your dog’s environment is.

Before pairing the device, make sure you’ve got the latest version of firmware for your handheld by downloading and running WebUpdater.  Instructions for pairing with the tempe varies by device, but it’s typically found under the “ANT Sensors” page within the setup menu.  You can learn more about the tempe on our Trail Tech page.

Once your handheld is updated and your unit is paired, you’ll need to experiment to determine the best place to mount the tempe, since the wireless signal can be significantly degraded through metal or glass.  Once you find a position that works (and a place that isn’t easily pawed by your dog), simply affix the transmitter with a small piece of all-weather double-stick foam tape.

You can’t change the weather conditions, but with the tempe, you’ll know what you and your dogs are up against!
