Jake’s Journal: Bracket-busting @Garmin in good company with top tweeps

It's been a busy spring, with more fun on the horizon. In the next month, I go to Lehigh Valley, PA, for one of my favorite half-marathons, then Tahoe with Team Garmin to kick off Tour of California, and finally some geocaching in Vail, CO, at the Teva Mountain Games.

Brandrace But before I get ahead of myself, March brought around two major highlights: South x Southwest and the first-ever Twitter Brand Race. As others pored over basketball scores, I was slightly obsessed with a different bracket. At random times throughout March, Chris Spagnuolo would post a one-on-one matchup between 64 of the world's best brands, simply asking: "Who will respond first?" My month of watching, waiting and tweeting resulted in the following: A record-setting 12-second response in the Sweet 16, new friends at some of my favorite brands, and surprising victories over Xbox, Target and Coca-Cola for the title of Brand Race Champion. Click here to read a fun little recap of the entire tournament, and you can see the final bracket here. While at SXSW, I was able to share ideas with the best social media gurus in the business, which means I'll be having even more fun with everyone that follows our @Garmin Twitter account and Facebook page (keep in mind that there are a lot more of you than there are of us, so we try to keep up as best we can).

Jeremiah Small Crop With those new lessons, connections and ideas in mind, I'm excited to represent Garmin and join several other Kansas City companies at next week's Social Business Summit and Strategy Workshop here in KC with industry icon Jeremiah Owyang. Tuesday, April 26, I'm on a panel with Sprint, H&R Block, Applebee's, Hallmark and AMC Theatres, and you can learn more about the day-long summit at SocialIRL.com. What's cool about this summit is that, rather than a typical conference and keynote, you can spend a full day learning from Jeremiah in an interactive hands-on workshop. And since I'd love to have as many of you as possible attend, I've been given a discount code – SBSGARMIN – to share so that you can save on registration costs. If you're unable to attend, you can still follow the discussion at #socialirl.
