Iron Cowboy Challenge

What comes to mind when you hear the word cowboy? There’s probably an image inspired by an old western themed movie of a man with a cowboy hat, spurs and lasso in hand. James Lawrence, nicknamed the “Iron Cowboy”, is changing the way people think of that term. Instead of donning old western apparel, he is equipped with a swimming cap, biking shoes, Garmin Edge and a Forerunner 920XT.

Lawrence set out on June 6th to achieve his goal of completing 50 full ironman courses in 50 days in 50 states. To put that in perspective, he is swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2 miles for 50 days in a row! He started this journey in Hawaii and has been working his way across the country.

On Monday, Iron Cowboy stopped in Wichita to cross off Kansas from his list and we were there to cover it. His team consists of three of his good friends, his wife and their five children. Traveling around in an RV, a van and a car, the squad continues to fire on all cylinders as they cross the country.

With the West Coast done, Lawrence and crew are making their way through the heartland before heading south to the East Coast and then heading back to their home in Utah. As of right now, Iron Cowboy has completed 10 full ironman courses and is in the process of completing his 11th in Oklahoma and has 39 left to go before accomplishing his goal and completing another world record.

While every day is spent battling and breaking through his own physical and mental barriers, Lawrence and team also keep a close eye on the clock. Each new day and new state have different problems that arise, each posing their own concern for setting them back on time. However, they have made it clear that they’re not concerned with times, they’re just focused on completing each new day. James Lawrence is determined and confident that he will conquer this test.

As each day brings a new state, Iron Cowboy will saddle up to fight the fight and continue on his journey to completing his 50-50-50 challenge.
