Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run isn’t just about running. It’s about introducing healthy eating habits, practicing kindness, gratitude, and community service. It’s also about having a safe place for young women to be active and enjoy themselves.

That’s why we are proud to wrap up another season with Girls on the Run at the Garmin Headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. While we enjoy creating products used by runners around the world, our associates also like to give back by volunteering for programs that introduce the next generation to a lifelong sport.

“I’ve seen the girls transform from early in the season when they might be shy and not as confident, to the end of the season where they want to contribute to the group discussion and encourage each other in our workouts,” organizer Jennifer Worthington said.

Worthington has been involved with the program for four years. With the help of five other volunteers, she brings out the best in these young women.

“We teach the girls to just keep moving and do your best,” Worthington said. “We don’t want them comparing what they can do to the other girls but to support and encourage each other. I think that’s an important lesson.”

The girls train twice a week from mid-March until May 17th when they ran a celebration 5K at Corporate Woods in Overland Park, Kansas. The Garmin girls combined with more than 1,900 girls from other clubs around the Kansas City Area to complete their season.

Julia Schrick, a participant for the last two seasons, saw it as a enjoyable opportunity to learn about health and exercise.

“I love everything about Girls on the Run; the games, the coaches, the running and making new friends,” she said. “It has been a good experience for me. I was able to reach my 5K goal both in the fall and in the spring. Girls on the Run is so much fun!”
