Geo_dsc00840“The principal of Washington Street School, James Butler, requested an innovative team-building activity for the annual faculty retreat. I immediately purposed that GeoCaching was the answer!  Our school is the proud owner of 25 Garmin e-Trex Legend GPSes, and the coastal town of Wilmington, North Carolina is the perfect location for this high-tech adventure.

“I traveled to Wilmington’s historic district along the Cape Fear River to prepare for the venture. I located and marked 30 historical sites using the GPS. Restaurants, bathrooms, and shopping areas were also entered for reference. Notebooks were created with the cache detail sheets and a rotation schedule was devised to reduce confusion at the sites.

“A month before the trip, teachers attended a 10 hour workshop on the use of the Garmin eTrex Legend GPS.  They were introduced to the satellite system and components of the unit. They mastered the devices by entering waypoints and locating caches. Suggestions were given on how teachers could enhance classroom lessons using the GPS.

“The faculty and staff were divided into 10 groups of 4 participants. The five hour adventure was filled with anticipation and enthusiasm. The final cache was a restaurant where participants dined and reflected on the day’s events.

“One teacher remarked, “It was a magnificent adventure!” Others commented that it was a technological journey and wanted to repeat the activity.  The entertaining and stimulating exploration was enjoyed by all participants!”
