Garmin Store: Protect Your GPS
The Garmin nüvi and StreetPilot certainly have become hot items lately, not only with consumers, but also with thieves. This past weekend, your own blogger from the Windy City experienced how badly criminals seem to want to get their hands on a nüvi. At a rest stop between Chicago and Kansas City, a group of bandits tried to break into my car, in broad daylight nonetheless, to get to the nüvi that was suctioned cupped to the windshield. Fortunately, they were unsuccessful and only damaged the door handle, but it certainly brought forth the need to discuss ways to protect your Garmin.
1. Register your unit with us.
2. Utilize the “Garmin Lock” feature that is incorporated in most of our new automotive units. When the unit is “locked”, you must enter a 4 digit pin in order to turn the unit on, and if you do not know that code, you must return to the exact location where the lock code was set or the unit will not unlock. While this will not prevent theft, it will at least make the unit unusable for whatever scoundrel makes off with it.
3. Removing the unit from the windshield mount and hiding it is not enough. Many thieves know what GPS mounts look like. Remove the mount and GPS from the windshield when you leave your car.
