Screen shot 2013-03-18 at 1.29.03 PMGarmin has long supported education for all ages, and this month has been a perfect example of how our colleagues share their time, talents and expertise to help students focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

Science Pioneers: The Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair was held March 13-15 at Union Station, and Garmin sponsored the Senior Division. Nearly 1,000 students from 4th-12th grades submitted projects and inventions, and our engineers had fun interviewing the students and learning about their projects to help determine who received which awards.

FIRST Robotics Competition: In this fantastic program, students build 120lb robots from a kit of parts and program them to compete according to the rules – in this case, a game called Ultimate Ascent, where the robots have to launch frisbees at targets for points. More than 1,000 students ages 14-18 on 60 high school robotics teams from throughout the region gathered last week at Hale Arena, where a dozen Garmin associates participated as team mentors, award judges or event volunteers. Throughout the season, these team mentors met weekly during lunch to collaborate and share ideas, challenges, etc. And this isn't limited to our hometown of KC; our colleagues in Salem, OR are also very involved.

KC Stem Alliance: This collaborative network includes educators, business affiliates and organizations that inspire interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math careers. And a great example of that inspiration is our colleague, Sunita, who volunteers nearly every opportunity she gets and graces the cover of their March 2013 newsletter (above).

Thank you to these and other amazing organizations who are helping groom our next generation of leaders. We're proud to be a part of your efforts!
