Garmin Connect Data Keeps You Honest

Photo: Matthew Lamb Garmin sponsored triathlete Ben Collins is off to a great start this season with seven top ten finishes in ten starts! During Ben's downtime (which is not often) you can find him with his feet up and a magazine or book in hand. Here is what Ben had to say after reading a recent magazine article:

Triathlete Magazine recently wrote an article titled “Eight Reasons Your Coach Hates You”. The main theme of their eight reasons is that people are poor communicators, or try to lie to their coach about their training. What struck me about this is that most of my communication with my coach is online through Garmin Connect, where my coach can see my entire workout file. There’s no way Photo: Matthew Lamb for me to bend the truth because my Garmin data shows him exactly what happened. I add in a few short comments about how I felt (e.g. “target pace was way easier/harder than normal”), why some numbers might look strange (e.g. “I took a little extra time between reps to use the restroom), and how I’m recovering (e.g. “had a meeting that cut into my stretching time”).  With a few brief statements to convey my subjective information, plus the concrete data from my Garmin I rarely have to take more than five minutes of my coach’s time for a meeting.  I think the article in Triathlete Magazine should have a ninth reason: you don’t let him see your data on Garmin Connect.
