Five Reasons to Upgrade your COMM Radio with Garmin

Screen Shot 2014-07-08 at 8.27.06 AMIt’s only been a year since the GTR 200 panel mount comm radio was announced at Oshkosh 2013. Designed specifically for experimental and light sport aircraft, the GTR 200 offers pilots a powerful 10-watt radio with a built-in stereo intercom, providing features more commonly found on high-end audio panels. Team X, our experimental avionics team, has been hard at work this year issuing free software updates and adding to the feature line-up. Below are five reasons to consider upgrading your COMM radio today:

1.    Advanced Audio Panel Features

From the beginning, the GTR 200 has provided advanced features including 3D audio, which provides spatial separation of the active frequency, monitored standby frequency and pilot/copilot audio. 3D audio makes it even easier to recognize whether you’re receiving on the active or standby frequencies without looking for the RX indicator on the display.

2.    G3X / G3X Touch and Portable Integration

The GTR 200 interfaces with the G3X and G3X Touch glass flight displays, which conveniently receives a frequency in the comm’s standby position directly from the waypoint page. Full touchscreen control of the GTR 200 is available through G3X Touch, which offers even easier radio tuning directly from the touchscreen. Also, the aera 5XX, aera 7XX and GPSMAP 696/695 is also compatible and hundreds of frequencies/IDs are automatically transferred to the GTR 200 via the portable or G3X/G3X Touch.

3.     User-defined Frequency Presets

For easy retrieval, the GTR 20 stores up to 20 pilot-selectable frequencies as well as the 20 most recently used frequencies. Stored frequencies are also easy to identify because the airport identification labels are displayed below the frequency so you’ll never forget which frequency is currently tuned.

4.    Unique Audio Features

Just released last week, the latest software for the GTR 200 includes a variety of features that unleashes even more power and adds new audio capabilities.  Version 2.60 adds a Music Bass Boost feature with Off, Medium, and High settings and Music Equalizer Presets, including Off, Pop, Classical and Rock settings.

5.    Convenient (and free!) Software Updates

Software updates are easy because the GTR 200 is updated via the face mounted micro SD card and even better, they’re free and may be downloaded from our website!

These are just five reasons the GTR 200 offers pilots an advanced audio panel at a great value! If you’ve been considering upgrading your COMM radio and want to see the GTR 200 in action, be sure to visit the Garmin booth at Oshkosh in a few short weeks where we’ll have plenty to show off, including the GTR 200.
