Bill, a pro on the SKA tournament trail, has a 36′ Invincible rigged with the latest Garmin equipment including a pair of GPSMAP 7215s, a GMR 604xHD, a VHF 300 AIS, a GMI 10, a GSD 22 black box sounder and a GXM 51satellite weather/audio receiver – with a brand new matching Garmin wrap to boot! With blue skys and calm seas – and at 50 mph with triple Yamaha 300s on the back – it didn’t take long before we reached one of Bill’s hotspots and began hauling in the big ones. Navigation chart on one screen and the sonar page on the other, Bill took us from one spot to another and showed us how he differentiates the lunkers from smaller fish and bait balls. With the high-definition target separation of the xHD on the radar screen, we were also able to easily pick up shrimp boats in the distance, and tried our luck (which was bountiful!) fishing behind those for a while too. Later in the day we could see rain showers around us, but with the help of the GXM 51 weather overlay, we were able to steer clear of anything but sunshine. As luck would have it, the day we went out was the last day of snapper season, so we happily caught our limit and added in some dolphin, wahoo and blackfin tuna to the box, too. We couldn’t have asked for a better day on the water!
