Edge 605/705 ready to roll at Interbike 07
Tom’s been racing for almost 3 years in the sport class for mountain biking and as a category 4 road racer. He also does some cyclocross racing. He rides for the Free State Racing team based in Lawrence, Kansas. Tom’s managed to log about 2,500 miles so far this year and his Edge is with him on every ride. Tom said, “I feel naked without it. I mostly use it to gauge my fitness during training rides and races. Knowing my heart rate on rides and during races helps me to gauge my effort and help conserve some ‘matches’ for the final sprint, big hill, etc. It’s also nice to keep track of the amount of climbing and distances I ride.”
“The coolest thing I’ve used the Edge for is loading courses from MotionBased for my mountain biking vacations. Last year I went solo out to Crested Butte to go mountain biking for a week. Since I’d never been there before and was by myself, I needed a ‘guide’ for the trails I wanted to do. I was able to find all the rides on MotionBased, loaded them as courses onto my 305, and rode all week without getting lost.” And, he added, he beat the Virtual Partner every time. I’m not surprised. Tom may seem an easy-going guy, but all bets are off when tread meets trail.

Tom’s role as a mechanical engineer on the fitness products is quite varied, but basically he takes the form that the industrial design team comes up with and fits the electronic “guts” into it. Another fun part of his job involves various forms of testing—vibration, impact, temp/humidity and field testing. He even has to develop custom testing at times for a particular product, like testing the reaction of sunscreen with certain paints used on fitness devices.
