echo 550c: Tips from the pro

TV host and fisherman/outdoorsman extraordinaire, Wade Middleton, has been out on the water with Garmin's new echo 550c again, and now that the echo units are available in stores, Wade recently wrote in with some tips on how to best use the information you're seeing on your echo fishfinder screen…

Wade "When using a fishfinder, don't just use it to tell you how deep the water is. Use it to find exactly where the fish are holding. Look for clues as to where the fish are positioned to allow you to chose what presentation and baits you need to be using in that fishing situation. In the picture above, you can see a couple of big fish holding very deep, right on top of a piece of structure on the right, near the bottom. You can also see several smaller fish and bait fish suspended in the same area, but for me, those big ones are the ones I want to catch."

In order to target those bigger fish, I need to get a bait deep into where they're living. In this situation here, I would probably first go with a big heavy jigging spoon to be able to present my bait right where the two fish are holding on the structure, and fish it vertically. If that didn't work, I'd probably down size to a smaller drop shot bait, once again fishing it vertically, in hopes of enticing a bite. Good luck and hope that helps you catch more fish."
