Clipper Update: Cape Town Complete
The Cape Town leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is complete. Competition among the entire Clipper fleet was close and came down to the wire and Great Britain ended up winning Race 3, while Henri Lloyd came in second.
Team Garmin led for a good portion of the race but the field leveled out and kept the leaders within 100 nautical miles of each other. Competition got so close that some of the teams went into 'Stealth Mode', where their position wasn't reported for 24-hour increments.
Next up is Race 4, which will take the Clipper Fleet from Cape Town, South Africa, to Albany, Australia. The race will span nearly 4,700 nautical miles and will begin on Monday, November 4th. For this leg, Team Garmin will see Clipper veteran and Chief Instructor Ben Bowley take the helm. Bowley boasts a wealth of big boat ocean racing and coaching experience.
"Having been closely involved in crew training and the commissioning of the new fleet, I am really looking forward to seeing how the new yachts perform in the Roaring Forties. I’m expecting great things. The Southern Ocean has always filled me with a great sense of excitement; it is the most beautiful seascape in the world," said Bowley.
Bowley replaces current Team Garmin skipper Damian Parnham who decided to leave the race after the completion of the Cape Town leg. Best of luck to Ben Bowley and Team Garmin on their adventure to Australia!
