Bringing Awareness One Mile At A Time

The month of October brings colder temperatures, falling leaves, pumpkins on front porches and trick-or-treating. October is also the time of the year we raise awareness for breast cancer. This month reminds us to increase our knowledge and understanding about the disease that affects 1 in 8 women during their lives. Many people participate in different kinds of walks, runs and other events in support of finding the cure. One supporter, entrepreneur and athlete, Andy Funk, is very busy this October planning the Vegas In 24 event, which brings attention to the Pink Lotus Foundation. The Pink Lotus Foundation was developed with his wife Kristi, a breast cancer surgeon, and dedicates its sole efforts to helping women who have a breast cancer related issue today and need assistance – but cannot get it anywhere else.

The Vegas In 24 event is a 365-mile bike ride starting at the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles and ending in Las Vegas. Andy strives to complete the ride in 24 hours with no assistance.

“I will buy my own food, carry my own supplies and tubes, and fix my own flats,” Funk said. “Riding 365 miles in 24 hours is certainly possible, but doing it all on your own with 14,500 feel of elevation gain makes for a lot of ‘unknowns’.”

The entire event will benefit the Pink Lotus Foundation, and as such, will directly benefit low-income women in need of breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and support. Most of these underserved women either have no insurance at all or insurance that is not sufficient to allow them to receive the care they need. Many of them just have no financial means to even remotely get treated.

“I wanted to do something that appreciated the significantly desperate situations these women are in, I really wanted to maximize the value of each donation and have the highest possible amount go towards the actual cause. Vegas In 24 was the answer,” Funk said.  “While I need a bike and nutrition and a few products to make sure I will make it safely through the journey, the overall cost of the event requires just my body, heart, mind and soul, and those are free of charge. To me, it was the most honest way to give back.”

The ride will take place during spring 2016. To read more about the purpose of the Pink Lotus Foundation or the Vegas In 24 event, please go to http://vegasin24.com/a-commitment/
