Imagine moving with the waves of the Pacific Ocean as you paddle along the beautiful beachfront of Kona, Hawaii. Garmin stand up paddle boarder Jenny Kalmbach has that wonderful view any time she trains.

Having that picturesque workout spot allows her to get ready for Molokai-to-Oahu on July 26, one of the biggest races in her sport. Kalmbach won this event in 2009, and she really wants to take home the title again.

“It’s my favorite race because there are so many factors,” she said. “It’s not really you against the competition. It’s you against yourself and the channel.”

That water channel is called Ka’iwi, which separates the islands of Molokai and Oahu in Hawaii. Competing against the best paddle boarders in the world, Kalmbach will start at Kalua Koi on Molokai and stroke 32 miles to the Maunalua Bay Beach Park on Oahu.

As she keeps moving toward the race, Kalmbach will find the right balance to conquer the Ka’iwi channel.

“It’s definitely an endurance race,” Kalmbach said. “The wind is a big factor in a race like this. Knowing how to surf the swell can make a big difference.”

Kalmbach takes pride in her Garmin to manage paddle board training, especially the Forerunner 920XT. Kalmbach is not just working on the paddle board either. She likes to cross train with biking and running as well.

“It’s fantastic!” Kalmbach said. “I can plug something into the computer and it automatically syncs to my phone. Then I have my workout and I’m ready to go.”

With her past experiences as one of the world’s top paddle boarders, Kalmbach continues to work hard for the race. Now her main focus is keeping a positive frame of mind to win it again.

“This year my focus is going out there and enjoying the process that I get to be out there,” Kalmbach said. “I have to enjoy that whole journey across the channel.”
